I received a Diploma in Mathematics from University of Bologna and a Ph.D. in Machine Learning from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (IDIAP Research Institute) under the supervision of David Barber and Samy Bengio.

In September 2011 I joined Microsoft Research Cambridge as a post-doctoral researcher. Before that, I worked as a Marie-Curie fellow at the Statistical LaboratoryCambridge University, with Philip Dawid as scientist in charge, and as a post-doctoral researcher at the Max-Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, in the Department of Empirical Inference led by Bernhard Schoelkopf.

My research interests are based around probabilistic models, graphical models, Bayesian methods, approximate inference, time-series models, and their applications to real-world problems, particularly in the medical and genetic areas.

NEWS: My monograph on models with explicit segment-duration distribution has been accepted in Foundations and Trends in Machine Learning. [pdf]
